La Sobremesa

overview

Until now, around 400 people from 51 different countries of origin have played the board-games of “La Sobremesa”!

“La Sobremesa” is an AWARD-WINNING* community awareness and education program which aims to support the community in understanding gender inequality, healthy relationships, consent, and how to challenge rigid gender stereotypes.

The aim of this project is to bring the community together in “la Sobremesa” -this term refers to the Spanish and Latin American tradition of having relaxing informal conversations at the table after a meal. To make the conversations flow easily, we play board-games that explore the topics mentioned above in a safe, relaxed, and fun environment.

OPPORTUNITIES

Latin Stories Australia is delivering workshops for the wider community (13+ years old).

We can come to your organisation or school and play board-games with you focused on gender inequality, gender stereotypes, and consent.

MORE INFO:

Through gamification, we bring together people from different demographics (e.g. age, gender identity, and country of origin) to have fun playing our three different board-games while learning and reflecting on gender inequality, gender stereotypes, and consent.

Three games were developed for the “La Sobremesa” project. These games are the first of their kind and were created by and for the community. These games were developed in conjunction with artist and Latin American collaborators; making Latin American talent, knowledge, and professionalism shine overall. Each game takes between 30 to 45 minutes plus reflection time.

The session are delivered by experienced facilitators who provide a safe, relaxed, and fun environment where learnings blossom. They could be led in Spanish or English.

*Maximum capacity per session of 24 participants

We are collaborating with organisations to bring la sobremesa to their communities! this is what they think…

“Please know that the students really enjoyed their time with you, meeting you, and learning about the concepts like consent. Thank you also for allowing the local government service staff to be involved; they have been eagerly awaiting these board games for a long time and were keen to see what they were all about! As an add on, the rest of the Community Development Team was really impressed with the resources and with how these games presented new and important content to the young people in a fun and interactive manner. We were all of the opinion that your session was very effective and reinforces how learning can happen while having fun and animated discussions!” (Participant Organisation)

“We would really want to thank you for coming to our program to facilitate the consent session. Our participants felt the game was really fun, engaging, and creative. We really like how we can hear each other’s stories and learn the key elements of consent through playing a game! And the reflection after the game was so powerful too. What a great idea and creation you have made to support the community! We wish you all the best for your passion and mission, and we would like to continue to support you through collaboration in the near future” (Participant Organisation)

THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE BOARD-GAMES

The board-games that we play in the workshops were developed based on consultation with the community, experts on the field, and research activities (Nov 2021 - December 2022).

community consultations

The first step of this project was to develop the “board games” and for that we got the support of the community!

We undertook 3 consultation sessions with the community:

  • Two with the broader community.

  • One with the LGBTIQ+ community.

We tested the board games with some members of the community and received advice from some experts on the field.

WORKSHOPS TO THE COMMUNITY

Between July 2021 and July 2023, Latin Stories Australia delivered 7 workshops to more than 100 members of the Latin American Community, a pilot project that supported the need of society to address the drivers of gendered violence. This pilot program was funded through the Victorian Government’s Supporting Multicultural and Faith Communities to Prevent Family Violence: 2021 Grant Program.

Between July 2023 and June 2024, we delivered 16 workshops to the WIDER COMMUNITY. Almost 300 people from 51 different countries of origin, ages, migration status, gender identities and sexual orientation participated on the sessions.
